What does “Good Posture” even Mean?
Whenever I have to tell a Patient that part of the cause of their pain is because they have “Poor Posture”, I’m almost always given a blank stare in return. So how do you know what good and bad posture is?
Posture can be measured by the curvature of your spine.
Your spine is a very complicated piece of engineering with roughly 24 bones, 24 discs, 50 facet joints 31 pairs of nerves, and hundreds of muscles and ligaments. So even with a slight deviation from normal can effect a wide range of structures.
From the side, your spine should have 3 natural curves in it. If they are too big or too small (there is an acceptable range of normal) the your posture would be ‘poor’ and could lead to dysfunction in your spine and nervous system, and, eventually into various types of pain and symptoms. From the front (or back) your spine should be straight – simple!
Your body is a reflection of the environment that you put it in, if you spend all day in the sun, you get a tan, If you lift weights all day, you get big muscles, and if you spend all day in the wrong positions, without doing anything to offset it, then your body adapts to that environment, and it can result in some very common pain syndromes.
