Foods that are Immune System Superheroes!

As I have posted before, the food you eat can be the best medicine, or the greatest poison you can use. Here are a few of the good things you should eat this winter to reduce the risk of the common cold.

Brazil Nuts  Brazil nuts have a higher level of selenium than any other food source which fight free radicals and prevent cellular damage — all of which compromise the immune system.

Fatty Fish Fish such as tuna, mackerel, sardines and salmon contain high levels of Omega 3 oils, which help to boost your white blood cells and antibodies, to fight infections, such as colds and flu, and prevent inflammatory processes. Don’t like fish? just take a supplement from your chemist!

Brightly Coloured Vegetables – Red/Yellow Etc..   Beta carotene is a super-nutrient known to be good for the immune system because it helps fight antioxidants and keeps the blood healthy. Pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots and even spinach (despite it being green, not orange) are all high in beta carotene.

Mushrooms  Mushrooms are one of the best natural sources of Vitamin D ( you can get it from the sun too!) which boosts the immune system and fights off colds and flu.

Oysters  Oysters are the best natural source of Zinc which is essential for preventing and lessening infections, and can even reduce the severity and length of an infection. Other sources include beef, chicken, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds.
