3 Tips about your bottled Water.

waterbottle-sutherland-chiro-chiropractic-backpain-neck-pain-headache-migraine-disc-sciatica-menai-kirrawee-gymea-miranda-cronulla-illawong-bardenridge-engadine-loftus

1.  Avoid using old plastic water bottles, especially if they have been creased or heated repeatedly.
Many manufacturers are phasing it out, but BPA (a petrochemical plastic derivative) is still commonly used in production of plastic bottles and is thought to be detrimental to your health. so much so that many European countries have banned its use.
Try using a refillable steel or aluminum (not plastic lined) or BPA free water bottle. They are readily available from many retailers.

2. Bottled water is up to 1500 times as expensive as tap water – and its the same stuff!
Plan ahead and refill your reusable water bottle, take it to work or leave it in the car, that way you can save money and resources.

3.  Bottled water is not Fluoridated  –
Many Dentists have recommended not to excessively use bottled water as you miss out on fluoride which aids to maintain the health of your teeth.

So think twice before you just buy another bottle!

Fat VS Muscle

Many patients lately have been telling me that they are trying to lose weight…

I guess what they really mean is that they want to lose some fat -

As you exercise ( especially if you don’t usually do any,) your body will put on extra muscle to accommodate for your increased level of activity. if you keep this up and have a healthy diet then 2 things will happen
1. you will lose fat ( and lose weight)
2. You will gain Muscle ( and put on weight)

So don’t let the scales be your measure of if you are being successful in your health goals, try paying attention to how your clothes fit, or how you look in the mirror after you have a shower.

Muscle is about 3X as dense as fat ( so the same weight of it takes up 1/3 of the space)

Remember the old saying ”áb’s are made in the kitchen” diet is about 70-80% of the change needed to change your body fat %

Whiplash – What you can do about it.

1. What is whiplash?

Whiplash is the term given to the injuries sustained in the muscles bones ligaments and joint in the neck as a result of sudden acceleration or deceleration of the head on the neck.

2. What causes Whiplash?
Whiplash is caused by a rapid speeding up or slowing down of the head on the neck, and then back the other way ( hyper flexion and hyper extension) – similar to the motion seen in a whip! This causes some traumatic stretching, tension and compression of various musculo-skeletal, and neurological structures in the cervical spine. it is mostly caused in car accidents, by either being unexpectedly hit from behind, or having to slam on the brakes unexpectedly. It also occurs commonly as a result of various sporting injuries .

3. What can I do About my Whiplash injury?
Whiplash is commonly associated with some muscle tearing, filamentous inflammation and joint restriction/locking. After the initial Health Professional assessment is made, anti inflammatories, ice packs and manual therapy are commonly used to alleviate the symptoms and restore proper function to the affected area. Without treatment, most symptoms will eventually subside, but the long term effects of the injury can include arthritis, disc degeneration, neurological pain and loss of motion.

If you or someone you know has had a whiplash injury, let them know that chiropractic can help.

3 Ways to manage Scoliosis.

Scoliosis is any sideways curvature of the spine.  There are many reasons that people can get a scoliosis, some are genetic and cant be changed, some are generated by lifestyle. Scoliosis tends to develop in late childhood. About one in every two people is thought to have mild scoliosis, which over the course of time develop degeneration of the spine, and various pain syndromes.

1. Chiropractic treatment managing the scoliosis with your chiropractor, is be simple and easy, and can prevent you from having complications in the long term.

2. Yoga or a stretching routine – Stretching can help mobilise joints that are under constant pressure from your scoliosis and relieve some of your pain

3. Regular exercise and movements that are different to what you usually do – Healthy movement for your body is like good nutrition for your insides. The key is variation in what you do, mix it up! Run, walk, swim, play a team sport, just do something other than sit around all day! it will all help.
Scoliosis can be mild, moderate or severe. The symptoms and signs of scoliosis can include:

  • One shoulder tilted down towards a raised hip, as if you are is leaning sideways
  • Prominent ribs
  • A protruding shoulder blade
  • Tilted waist
  • The curve is more pronounced when you bend forward.

3 Ways Chiropractic can fix your Sciatica

Sciatica is when your ‘sciatic nerve’ gets  squashed somewhere between your spine and your leg . This can occur as a result of a spinal disc bulge or herniation, from misalignment of the vertebrae, or as a result of degenerated discs that can reduce the diameter of the hole through which nerve roots exit your spine. Chiropractic Care addresses this problem in a variety of ways.

1. Adjusting your lower back:
A Chiropractic adjustment normalises joint function and can remove factors contributing to sciatic pain, such as soft nerve compression, referred pain, disc pain and postural pain syndromes.

2. Relaxing tight Gluteal and Piriformis Muscles:
Your sciatic nerve can get compressed between tight muscles as it weaves between them to go down and supply your leg. Relaxing these muscles can take the pressure off the nerve and reduce your pain

3. Providing postural and stretching exercises for you to do:
Finding out the cause of your issue and removing it is essential, and most of the time, these are some stretches and postural change exercises that you can do to dramatically speed up your recovery.

Is Blood Stickier than Water?

  • Here is a thought, – when you were a cavemen (or just a more primitive version of you),
We had to scavenge for our food. If we wanted to eat a big feast of meat from freshly caught game, we would have to go out and hunt. I’m not sure if any of you has ever been hunting, but it is a stressful thing to do. Adrenaline rushes, you see that Lion, Boar, Rabbit, Kangaroo, Goat, Bison, or whatever you wanted to catch. You had to chase it down, risk your own life to kill it, there is likely to be a struggle, you may even give up and it will chase you back. In the end it used to be Kill or be Killed.
This Process would rarely last more than a few hours. Then  we would be able to relax. Adrenaline and the stress hormones in would blood stream will reduce, and the feel good serotonin hormones can increase and you feel good. You could rest better, digest your food better and sleep well at night.

What if in the process of the hunt, the animal, bit or scratched you? – Your body had prepared for this.
A natural response to your adrenaline and stress hormones increasing in your blood stream is for your blood to slightly thicken and release clotting factors – so in case you got cut, you wouldn’t bleed to death quickly. A scab would form and you could continue the Hunt or retreat and repair. Your blood would thicken and your Blood pressure would increase

These days food is abundant for us – We don’t need to Hunt. But we do have stress in our lives.
Instead of hunting an animal and having a short peak in our stress ( and thickening of your blood) followed by a proper relaxation (and thinning of our blood), we have a bigger hunt on our hands, (no more tigers, lions and buffalo). Instead we have 30 year mortgages, unhealthy mental and emotional relationships, Chronic disease, polluted food air and water and often dis-satisfying work environments. These factors cause chronic stress, hence chronic thickening of our blood. this leads to chronic high blood pressure, increased risk of cardiovascular disease. stroke and other conditions. Instead of relaxing properly, you elect to take blood thinners long term which have their own side effects (not to mention becoming a life long customer of a pharmaceutical company)

Do you see the problem here?
In our Western Society it has become increasingly difficult to learn how to properly deal with stress, financial, social, physical, and environmental. A common theme for dealing with this is to talk about it, re asses your priorities and goals in your life and make sure that what your are sacrificing for what you want is worth the cost. Christians pray, Buddhists meditate, and there are many ways to properly relax. Just make sure you are doing something and living a sustainable lifestyle with your mental stress levels because it has huge effects on your physicality. It will save you money and lengthen your life. Who doesn’t want that!

Sicknesscare VS Healthcare – Whats the Difference?

Think of it like this:
A prominent Chiropractic speaker James Chestnut draws this analogy – If your house is burning down, its an acute emergency – you call the fire brigade, They put the fire out and your house is saved. But a partially burned down house needs repair. If you call the fire brigade (the emergency care team) they wont rebuild your house for you. You need a team of separate specialist contractors to do it for you. A carpenter, plumber, electrician, painter etc… these are the people that can make your house functional again and maintain it for you so it can be a home again.

How does that relate to healthcare?
When you injure your body, and are in incapacitating pain ( like a house burning down) you go to the Hospital, or to your GP. (like the fire brigade) They can stitch you up, replace your heart, give you Antibiotics and do an excellent job in saving your life. That’s SICKNESSCARE. They are looking after you in a time of sickness to prolong your life. And this is critically important. But its not health.

Healthcare is a proactive step to maintain and enhance your overall wellbeing and avoid getting sick. This means having a team of specialist contractors (like you plumber, carpenter, electrician etc…) to help you to stay healthy. These people are your Chiropractors, Massage Therapists,  Nutritionists, Personal trainers, Counselors, Psychologists, Pastors, Mentors and accountable Family. Staying healthy, fine tuning your body and avoiding sickness. That’s HEALTHCARE!

Hip pain – common causes.

How?
Hip Pain can be caused by a variety of structures – mainly, muscles, ligamants, tendons, bones and joint surfaces. It is commonly caused by:
1. An over use injury like from doing lots of running. This mainly causes muscle and ligament injuries that can be treated with the RICE protocol (see last newslettter)
2. Poor biomechanical chain movements (From a leg length difference or a twisted pelvis) These can cause sprain and strain injuries in the knee and lower back and can cause joint issues
3. Long term wear and tear (carrying heavy loads or physical manual labour) – This mainly effects the Hip joint itself and can result in Osteoarthritis of the Hip joint.

What to do?
Find out the root cause of your Hip pain and get rid of its influence, you may need some orthotics or a heel lift if you have a leg length difference(which we can asses for you here), you may need some Chiropractic treatment to normalise the joint arrangement and function, or you may simply need some new shoes, or a different training routine.

At Sutherland Chiropractic we are highly skilled in dealing with all sorts of pain syndromes and can asses, diagnose and recommend the most appropriate treatment for you.

R.I.C.E What When and Why.

What
The RICE acronym is used in treating soft tissue injury (Muscles/Ligaments etc) It decreases the injury recovery time and gets you back and mobile more quickly and more comfortably.

R = Rest: This breaks the cycle of injury, if you continue to use a torn muscle or ligament, the inflammation and swelling and pain will continue to appear
I = Ice: This is to reduce the blood flow to the area, and therefore reduce the amount of swelling bruising and inflammation
C = Compression: Compression decreases the room available for swelling, and also aide to prevent further injury to the structure – sports taping also works well for this.
E = Elevation: Elevation reduces swelling by making it difficult for fluid to pool around the injury because it has to overcome gravity.

When
fluid Its good to apply the RICE acronym as soon as in injury occurs and for up to 5 days after the injury, If pain persists then you MUST see a health professional.

Why
The overall is to reduce pain, and improve recovery time, eliminate further re-injury, reduce swelling and inflammation.

Sometimes Anti-inflammatory medications such as Neurofen and Voltaren are used as a chemical attack against inflammation, they work to stop your brain from feeling pain and they also decrease inflammation.
They must be used as an adjunct to the other methods and intervention by a health care professional, otherwise, you can be unknowingly re-injuring the area, but not be able to feel it because of the medication. This can lead to long term complications and longer healing times.

Type ‘O’Disorders….

Type ‘O’ Disorders are those that relate to an Organ of your body, as opposed to to a muscle, ligament, nerve or joint.

Some examples of these are:
Large Intestine – Can manifest as Diarrhea or constipation
Bladder – Can manifest as too frequent or infrequent Urination
Stomach – Can manifest as acid reflux

The theory behind it is that a dysfunction in a joint of your spine can put very slight pressure on the nerves that come out at that level and make that nerve overactive or under active. This process can trigger a range of symptoms, depending on where the dysfunction is.
See this picture for more details.

A recent Client that has had success with this type of disorder are:
A 12 week old boy that was suffering from reflux, did not respond to standard medical treatment and medication. We adjusted in between his shoulders where there were joints not moving properly, and in a matter of days his body healed of the reflux and he has not had a problem since.

A 5 year old boy was suffering from the feeling of needing to urinate very frequently (up to 30 times a day) he had some low back pain and joint dysfunction at the base of his spine. After a week of treatment, he has gone back to normal where traditional medicine failed.

This doesn’t happen every time, but is well worth checking out as there are no harmful side effects of a Chiropractic adjustment, as there can be with most medications.

So if you or someone you know is suffering from what sounds like a ‘Type O’ disorder, send them into the clinic and we can assess if spinal issues are the cause of the symptoms.

What does it mean to Eat Well, Think Well, Move Well?

If you had a pet monkey what mental stresses would you put it under?

If you had a pet monkey how much exercise would you make it do?

I’m not suggesting that we are monkeys, but we all can figure out what a healthy environment is for a monkey, So
          1. Why do we regularly feed ourselves such bad food?
          2. Why do we put ourselves under high levels of chronic mental stress and unhealthy relationships?
          3. Why don’t we exercise everyday like we know we need?
If we could all get fresh seasonal foods, have lower mental stress levels and do regular exercise, our health would improve very rapidly. we could sleep better, think clearer and avoid chronic disease.

Breast Feeding and Food Allergies

Experts have speculated for a long time about the correlation between breast feeding and food allergies.

This article briefly outlines the relationship between the immune cells passed from mother to child in the breast milk, and a boost in the child’s immune system that makes them less susceptible to developing potentially deadly food allergies.
There is no concrete evidence to support this as yet, But it makes sense doesn’t it.

The More natural, additive free, pesticide free, Genetically modified free, hormone enhanced free your food is, then the better it is for your body. Then you don’t have to process all the nasty chemicals, and your (and your babies) body, can do what it is meant to do without the added stressors of foreign chemicals.

Why do I still need Chiropractic care if I cant feel pain?

Chiropractic treatment can help you deal with all sorts of back pain, sports injuries and physical complaints, But did you know that it can actually help your body function better overall and prevent injuries?

Think of your body as the vehicle that carries your mind and consciousness around. When it stops working, or working properly, you cant do the thing that you want to with it. You feel pain, get treatment, and feel better. It might cost you a day off work, or a bit more pain than you can bear.

Some people are genetic Ferrari’s, and some are genetically made up of spare parts, some people need a bit more work than other to keep their body running properly and on the road before it breaks down or wears out. If you can see the value in getting your car regularly serviced, then your body should be exactly the same!

Make a regular appointment, regardless of how you are feeling, because regular chiropractic treatment can prevent problems from happening, and save you time energy and money. Your Chiropractor will be able to tell you how often to attend, and what homework you can do to reach your health goals

3 ways to manage a disc bulge

Disc bulges occur slowly over long periods of time, although you may not feel them happening. Prevention is the best management. If you have disc bulges they will rarely heal, but you can live comfortably if you manage them correctly.

3 ways to best manage you disc bulge.
1. Regular Chiropractic visits:
Chiropractic treatment aids to decrease pain, restore normal spinal function, and slow down the degenerative process that can lead to a disc bulge.
2. Stretching. Gentle stretching of the gluts and hamstrings compliments your chiropractic treatment and takes some of the tension off your disc bulge..
3. Core Strength. Increasing your core abdominal strength will help to prevent disc bulges, and will also rehabilitate current injuries, by stabilising the joints and taking the strain from your discs when you move or lift heavy loads.

Sore Muscles After you Exercise?

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a result of exercising to a point where you cause micro tears in your muscle fibers. It is the same mechanism by which you develop bigger muscles, as the muscle fibres heal thicker and stronger.

To speed up your recovery there are a few recommended techniques, although none of them work 100% of the time.

1. Rest and recovery.
After 2-3 days the most part of the pain should be gone, as your muscles have healed, extra muscle has been layed down, and the inflammation has settled.
2. Stretching. Gentle stretching of the effected muscles groups can speed up your recovery, by realigning muscle fibres and increasing blood flow to the area.
3. Massage. Massage with increase blood flow, push out some inflammation and stimulate the area to promote healing, you must exercise caution, as too much pressure can aggravate the area and be quite painful.

What is Carpal tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel Syndrome is when your median nerve (in your wrist) gets squashed and can cause pain, numbness, and pins and needles in you hand. It can be cause by a range of factors:

Overuse of the hand:  The tendons from the muscles that move your hand and fingers all run through your carpal tunnel. Using these too much can cause irritation to the tendons and cause inflammation and swelling in your carpal tunnel, which squashes the nerves and can cause symptoms in the hand

Neck problems The nerves that supply your hands and arms exit your spine at the base of your neck. Lower Neck joint problems can cause irritation of these nerves and cause symptoms in the hands. It is often worst at night while in bed and can wake people up with numb hands arms or fingers.

Shoulder and arm dysfunction:   After the nerves exit your spine at the base of your neck, they pass through a series of muscles in your shoulder, armpit, elbow and forearm. tension or knots in these muscles can contribute to compression of these nerves and worsen your Carpal tunnel syndrome.

Chiropractic can help you. If you or someone you know has Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, call our office and make a time to be assessed.

Do you Grind your teeth?

Clenching your jaw, or grinding your teeth can happen for a variety of reasons, and can happen both while you are awake and while you are asleep so you might not even notice. It can cause a range of issues

Headache  The muscles that move and clench your jaw are all connected somewhere in your skull, and these muscles can be tight, get knots and be fatigued and cause headaches.

Neck Pain The nerves that link your teeth, jaw joints, and head all converge in the top part of your neck and can cause neck pain if you have been grinding for a while.

Jaw pain   Like any other joint in your body, too much pressure for a sustained period will cause damage, and grinding or clenching can cause jaw joint pain also.

Tooth Damage  There is a huge amount of pressure going through your teeth while you clench, and over time this can wear away the enamel on your teeth, and can cause irreversible tooth damage. this is more of a dental issue to fix, but a chiropractor can help you identify if it is a problem for you.

Chiropractic can help you. If you or someone you know is grinding or clenching their jaw they should be assessed asap.
